If Lying, Survey Institutions Can Be Penalized

JAKARTA, July 11, 2014, KOMPAS.com – A survey institution that carries out a quick count process must convey true information to the public. Otherwise, pollsters who lie may be subject to criminal sanctions.

“As stipulated in Article 55 of the Public Information Disclosure Act, survey institutions that disseminate incorrect information may be subject to criminal sanctions,” said Research Center for Regional Research and Information (Pattiro) Ari Setiawan during a discussion entitled ‘Open Information on Fast Count Implementation. ..!!!’ at Transparency International Indonesia (TII), Friday (11/7/2014).

Not only survey institutions, he said, television stations that also intend to convey incorrect information can also be subject to criminal sanctions. This is because the information that was broadcast could potentially lead to riots between the two camps supporting the presidential and vice-presidential candidates.

Furthermore, today’s society must get mortal happiness due to the actions of survey institutions that published different results on the 2014 presidential election quick count. “People are forced to be happy with their candidates because each candidate they stand for wins,” he said.

To note, based on the results of a quick count of 12 survey institutions, seven of them stated that the Joko Widodo-Jusuf Kalla pair was superior to the Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa pair. The seven survey institutes are Kompas Research and Development, Indonesian Survey Circle, Indonesian Political Indicator, Populi Center, CSIS, Radio Republik Indonesia, Poltracking Institute and Saiful Mujani Research Center.

While the four survey institutions that won Prabowo-Hatta were Puskaptis, the Indonesia Research Center, the Indonesian Survey Institute and the Indonesian Voice Network.
